Persian wedding spread - sofreh aghd

The Persian Aghd, has a long a lustrous history, dating back many hundreds of years. The Adhd which is the legal ceremony of the Iranian wedding, is a spectacular and happy event celebrated with friends, family, music, dancing, food and fun.

Sofrah aghd which is a collection of items put together to make a spread which is traditionally laid out on the floor. The Sofrah includes the following items:

  • A mirror (large placed in the middle)
  • A bowl of eggs, and nuts
  • Candelabras
  • Candles
  • esphand or espand
  • sweets, honey, sugar
  • Platter of bread
  • A Termeh (embroidered cloth, often with gold thread)
  • herbs
  • coins (often gold)
  • fruit

Each of the elements that make up the Sofreh aghd has a symbolic meaning and each represents the hopes of those close to the bride and groom.
